A long-standing tradition of WAUPM meetings, CC&A stands for Changes, Challenges, and Achievements. Led by WAUPM Vice President Doria Deen, this session allows us as a group to discuss what has happened in the last several years. And there should be plenty for us to catch up on after a long break in meeting together in person.

1:00 - 2:30 pm - The Salt Lake Tribune and the Non-Profit Model - Silver Baron

In October 2019, The Salt Lake Tribune became “the first legacy newspaper in the U.S. to transform from a for-profit company to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.” Lauren Gustus, Executive Editor of the Tribune joins us to discuss what exactly this transformation has been like and how it is going.

In this session, we will do some post-COVID brainstorming with our friends from Flytedesk. This will include some insight into what they are working on and seeing in the industry. Some focus on corporate engagement on college campuses will also be included.

4:30 - 5:00 pm - Freshen up for dinner

5:30 - Park City Walking Food Tour sponsored by Flytedesk - Historic Main Street

Meet at Butcher’s Chop House & Bar (link to map embedded) at 5:30 – don’t be late! The address is 751 Lower Main Street. Options to get there:

  • Walk – it’s a beautiful, 25 minute walk from Silver Baron Lodge to Butcher’s Chop House. Enjoy the fresh and crisp mountain air of Utah!
  • Public Transportation – there are a couple bus options that run every 20 minutes past the lodge. The 1 Red, 2 Green, and 5 Yellow all go to the Old Town Transit Center and from there you can take a 4 minute walk or switch buses to the Town Lift stop.

We will be splitting into groups to go on walking tours of historic main street in Park City and enjoying food together at 3 amazing Park City restaurants – Butcher’s Chop House & Bar, Bangkok Thai, and Tekila Mexican Grill & Cantina.

For this session, we will be joined by Burke Olsen, VP & Head Digital Officer of Deseret News who will help us understand how Deseret Digital Media has evolved since we last heard from the group in our 2014 conference in Phoenix.

The past couple years have been a complete joy, our programs are thriving, and the students are easy. No?

Uh, no. We’ve persisted, and are doing the best we can under challenging circumstances. Some of our “upstream colleagues” see our role for what it is, a tremendously important student development activity. Today’s panel discussion will give us some common language to talk about our student engagement work from the university’s perspective.

The Challenge: How can college newsrooms emerge from the pandemic years with a stronger, more inclusive culture that allows for improved journalism? The pandemic broke traditions good and bad – including the chain of received wisdom and values that came from side-by-side editing and hours spent together in the newsroom. We’ll use the tools of performance driven change and Table Stakes to consider how we define success and how to get there. Prepare for a hands-on discussion and work session.

For a representative from each member school, this is a working breakfast. Grab some food and we will begin the business meeting as close to 8:30 as possible.

For industry guests and guest schools who have not left yet, feel free to grab breakfast before you depart.
